Florida officials set FIU briefing on legal action involving Raúl Castro
Gov. Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier are scheduled to discuss an “arrest warrant” for former Cuban leader Raúl Castro at Florida International University Monday. The announcement comes months after Castro was indicted over the 1996 downing of two planes linked to a Miami-based exile group.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier are scheduled to hold a news conference at Florida International University at 10 a.m. Monday regarding an “arrest warrant” for former Cuban leader Raúl Castro.
Officials have released few details about the planned announcement. Castro, 95, was indicted by the United States on May 20 over his alleged role in the 1996 downing of two planes operated by Brothers to the Rescue, a Miami-based Cuban exile group.
The indictment charged Castro and five others with four counts of murder, two counts of destruction of aircraft and conspiracy to kill U.S. nationals. Castro was Cuba’s defense minister at the time of the shootdown. The other defendants were described as pilots allegedly involved in the operation.
The scheduled briefing at FIU brings a case tied to a defining episode in the history of South Florida’s Cuban exile community to a local university campus. The state officials’ announcement is expected to provide more information about the warrant and the case.
