Jeffries’ South Florida visit puts national Democratic support behind Rodriguez campaign

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries visited Pinecrest on Friday to back Democratic congressional candidate Eliott Rodriguez, a sign that national Democrats are investing attention in the race against Republican incumbent Rep. María Elvira Salazar.

At CAO Bakery, Jeffries said he would advocate for resources to help Rodriguez reach voters. The campaign has joined the Democratic Party’s Red to Blue program, which provides additional support to candidates in targeted, competitive races as Democrats seek to win control of the House.

Rodriguez, a former CBS Miami anchor, criticized the economy, immigration policy and what he called corruption, saying voters want a change in leadership. Salazar responded by portraying Rodriguez and Jeffries as aligned with what she called radical socialist elements in the Democratic Party.

Rodriguez rejected that label, pointing to his family’s history in Cuba. He said his parents came to the United States and that his father’s family lost its business after the Cuban government confiscated it. Rodriguez said the experience shaped his opposition to communism and his support for capitalism and free enterprise.

Economic pressures also came up at the bakery, where co-owner Yvette Rodriguez said higher costs have affected the business. She said tariffs have led suppliers to raise prices on items including paper cups, prompting the bakery to increase coffee prices.

Salazar acknowledged that some voters are unhappy with the economy but defended the Republican record. She blamed the Biden administration for inflation and argued that returning Democrats to power could bring a repeat of those economic conditions.

The contest is drawing attention as both parties position themselves for the November election. Jeffries’ visit and the Red to Blue designation indicate that Democrats see an opportunity to compete in the district; the race could also affect the balance of power in the House. Salazar said she would welcome a visit from any prominent Republican, including President Donald Trump. Rodriguez urged voters to take part in early voting, scheduled to begin Monday.
