Broward candidate faces two threat charges over Facebook posts, records say

Former congressional candidate Elijah Manley was arrested after investigators linked him to Facebook posts threatening people amid a dispute over Florida Senate candidate Angie Nixon, according to an arrest affidavit. The Broward State Attorney’s Office has asked the governor to assign the case elsewhere because people listed as victims have taken part in charitable drives organized by the office.

Former Florida congressional candidate Elijah Manley faces two counts of intimidation for allegedly writing or sending threats to kill or injure after Facebook posts about supporters of state Senate candidate Angie Nixon, according to a Broward County arrest affidavit.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office was notified Aug. 21 about two posts from a Facebook account using Manley’s name, the affidavit says. Investigators believed the account belonged to Manley. The posts, which the affidavit says were made Aug. 20, followed disagreements among users about Nixon.

One post warned that the writer would burn a “castle” to the ground and harm anyone who got in the way. Another threatened to make life difficult for people who did not support Nixon, and a separate message threatened to decapitate those who did not back the Democratic nominee, according to the affidavit.

A user told detectives the posts frightened her and said the account holder had previously visited her home during political fundraising activities. On Aug. 28, detectives took sworn statements from two people at a residence. Both said they understood “castle” to mean their homes, and that they feared for their safety, the affidavit says. They reported the posts to Facebook, but Meta said the content did not violate its removal guidelines, according to the document.

The affidavit also says people urged Manley to moderate his language, but he refused, saying he was tired of being told to lower his voice while white people were allowed to cause harm. The document says he called for white voters to support the Democratic nominee.

Manley was arrested and later released after posting bond. The charges are allegations; the affidavit does not establish guilt.

Broward State Attorney’s Office spokesperson Paula McMahon said the office will not handle the case because the listed victims have participated in charitable drives organized by the office. The office has asked the governor to assign the prosecution to another state attorney’s office.

Manley ran in the August Democratic primary for a congressional seat and finished third, according to the report. The dispute over Nixon’s Senate candidacy unfolded amid calls for Democratic voters to unite behind the party’s nominee.
