Jacksonville has logged 157 pothole and roadway cave-in requests still in progress this month, while completing 168 repairs. The city says it has doubled repair crews after heavy rain weakened pavement across the area.

Jacksonville doubles road crews as rain fuels pothole repair backlog
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The city has doubled the number of crews assigned to potholes and roadway cave-ins as repair requests climb following heavy rain, Jacksonville officials said Tuesday. City data showed 157 pothole and cave-in requests listed as “in progress” in October as of Oct. 13, with 168 requests already completed during the month. The city uses “in progress” to indicate that a repair has been requested, according to the data. Melissa Ross, Jacksonville’s director of strategic initiatives and press liaison, said the city has more open repair requests than usual and has put additional workers on the streets. Recent rain is a major factor, Ross said, because water can weaken asphalt and lead to more pavement damage. Crews had to wait for the rain to ease before carrying out some repairs and are now working across the city, she said. Some Jacksonville neighborhoods have received more than 16 inches of rain so far this month, according to the city’s First Alert Weather Team. The damage has included more severe road failures. On Sunday, a large cave-in closed the intersection of Prudential Drive and Hendricks Avenue after a vehicle became stuck there. Ross did not give a timeline for clearing the repair backlog, saying the city is addressing requests as quickly as possible. Residents can report a pothole or cave-in through the MyJax service or by calling 630-CITY.
