Duval judge leaves bench after Florida commission files conduct charges
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Duval County Circuit Judge Eric Roberson retired effective Oct. 1, months after the Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission filed formal misconduct charges over comments he allegedly made during court proceedings. The commission filed the charges June 11. Roberson submitted an answer in July through his attorney, who argued that the judge had complied with 10 of the 11 judicial canons cited by the commission. The attorney also said Roberson acknowledged and regretted the conduct described in the charges. The allegations include an exchange in which Roberson allegedly called a woman an “entitled little snot” and told her father, “God bless you for not beating the tar out of her.” In a separate proceeding, he allegedly told a respondent, “There’s something seriously off with you.” The allegations have not been described as findings of misconduct. Roberson was appointed to the Fourth Judicial Circuit bench in 2017 by then-Gov. Rick Scott. No replacement had been announced as of Oct. 13. His departure follows another high-profile judicial exit in the circuit. In 2017, Judge Mark Hulsey III resigned amid allegations of racist and sexist remarks and inappropriate behavior toward court staff. Hulsey denied the allegations; his resignation came as a Florida House committee was preparing to consider impeachment proceedings.
