Jacksonville council to weigh housing proposal near Boobie Clark Park
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville City Council members were scheduled to discuss a proposal Tuesday night, Oct. 13, to build affordable housing near Charles “Boobie” Clark Park and Pool in Northwest Jacksonville. The first phase would authorize negotiations involving two outparcels totaling about 3.45 acres. The measure would also signal council support for a possible future transfer of the broader park property for later development phases. The proposal does not specify how many homes could be built, what rents or sale prices would qualify as affordable, or how the park and pool might be affected. The site is east of Sabal Road, north of Soutel Drive and west of the Shops of Sherwood. Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman, whose district includes the area, was not immediately available for comment. Jacksonville resident Johnathan McCloud supported adding homes but said affordability must be real for residents. He noted that many older homes are also beyond what people can afford. The discussion comes amid a broader city effort to expand lower-cost homeownership. In June, Jacksonville officials, the City Council and federal partners signed a letter of intent allowing an Alabama contractor to begin work on manufactured “starter” homes in Sherwood Forest. City officials said those homes are intended to provide a lower-cost option while reducing construction time and material waste. The city also certified an updated list of 15 surplus parcels considered suitable for affordable housing in June. It was not clear whether the Boobie Clark Park property is included in that effort. No council decision or subsequent action is established in the information available about Tuesday’s meeting. Residents seeking clarity on the proposed development’s scale, affordability requirements and implications for park space will need those details as the plan advances.
