Falcons’ late collapse sends overtime game against Ravens to 30-23 loss
Atlanta surrendered an eight-point lead in the final minute of regulation, then lost in overtime after quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was injured. Baltimore rallied without star quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was inactive.
The Atlanta Falcons let an eight-point lead slip away in the final minute of regulation and lost 30-23 to the Baltimore Ravens in overtime Sunday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The defeat came as quarterback Michael Penix Jr. left the game with an injury while trying to lead a late rally.
Atlanta had chances to put the game out of reach but failed to finish several scoring opportunities. The Ravens forced overtime by scoring late in regulation and converting a two-point attempt. Penix was injured during Atlanta’s ensuing drive, and Tua Tagovailoa took over at quarterback.
In overtime, Tagovailoa threw an interception that ended the Falcons’ last possession. Baltimore then completed the comeback for the win, despite being without two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson and giving up a defensive touchdown.
Penix had recently returned from knee surgery and helped Atlanta win road games against Green Bay and New Orleans. His injury cast a shadow over the Falcons’ return to their home stadium after those victories; the team had not announced a diagnosis in the information available after the game.
The loss marked a missed opportunity for Atlanta against a short-handed opponent. The Falcons’ inability to convert earlier chances, followed by the late lead and overtime turnover, turned a game they had controlled into a damaging home defeat.
