Georgia’s late stand seals 20-17 win over Alabama in Tuscaloosa
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Georgia held off Alabama 20-17 on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, earning its first win in Tuscaloosa since 2007 and improving to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in Southeastern Conference play. Quarterback Gunner Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards, a touchdown and an interception. With Georgia facing third-and-7 from its own 10-yard line and 2:36 left, he found Elyiss Williams for a 17-yard gain to keep the Bulldogs’ final possession alive. After two Bo Walker carries, an Alabama personal foul gave Georgia a first down, and the Bulldogs ran out the clock. Georgia’s defense had set up that chance to close the game. With 3:28 remaining, Alabama faced third-and-10 at the Georgia 34. KJ Bolden, Valdin Sone, Gabe Harris and Justin Williams brought down quarterback Keelon Russell for a 9-yard loss, pushing the Crimson Tide out of field-goal range and forcing a punt. Russell finished with 185 passing yards, one touchdown and four sacks. Peyton Woodring’s 23-yard field goal with 5:25 to play put Georgia ahead for good. The 10-play, 84-yard drive nearly began with a turnover when Sacovie White-Helton tried to field a bouncing punt, but Blake Stewart recovered the ball for the Bulldogs. Georgia and Alabama were tied 17-17 entering the fourth quarter. Stockton had given Georgia a 17-14 lead with a 14-yard touchdown run early in the third, while Alabama tied it on Conor Talty’s 39-yard field goal. The Tide took a 14-10 halftime lead on EJ Crowell’s 1-yard touchdown run on the final play of the second quarter. Georgia’s first-half scoring included a 43-yard Woodring field goal and a 20-yard touchdown catch by London Humphreys. Stockton’s throw to Humphreys capped a 93-yard drive that featured a 53-yard gain when tight end Jaden Reddell turned a short catch into 30 yards after the reception. Alabama answered with an 89-yard drive, capped by Russell’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Marshall Pritchett. At halftime, Georgia coach Kirby Smart said the Tide’s scoring drive included a 58-yard run after a missed run fit and a coverage breakdown. “That’s really the two plays they hit back to back, then they did a good job in the two-minute (offense),” Smart said in an ABC interview. Georgia’s win came as then-No. 1 Texas lost 27-24 to Oklahoma, opening the possibility that the Bulldogs could rise to No. 1 in the next rankings. Georgia is scheduled to host Auburn next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Alabama, now 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, is scheduled to play at Tennessee at the same time.
