Atlanta Dream return to WNBA Finals after edging Liberty in New York
The Atlanta Dream are headed to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2013 after surviving a tense finish to beat the New York Liberty 85-83 on Friday night at Barclays Center. Atlanta built a 12-point first-half lead in Game 3, then had to protect the narrow advantage in the final minute. The win completed a sweep of the best-of-five semifinal series and extended the Dream’s postseason record to 5-0. The fourth-seeded Dream previously swept the Washington Mystics in a best-of-three first-round series. They will begin the best-of-seven championship round on the road Oct. 17 against the winner of the other semifinal between the second-seeded Golden State Valkyries and third-seeded Las Vegas Aces. Golden State entered Friday with a 2-0 lead in that series. Atlanta’s return to the Finals marks its first appearance since 2013. The championship series is scheduled to continue Oct. 19, with Games 3 and 4 in Atlanta on Oct. 22 and 24. Further games are scheduled if needed.
