Maddox’s late touchdown lifts Georgia Tech past unbeaten Duke
ATLANTA — Georgia Tech needed a late drive to secure its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season, and Trelain Maddox finished it with a 1-yard touchdown run with 54 seconds remaining Saturday. The Yellow Jackets beat previously unbeaten Duke 28-25 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Tech covered 61 yards in eight plays over 1 minute, 38 seconds to take the lead. Duke drove into Yellow Jackets territory in the final minute, but Gavin Strange missed a 33-yard field goal wide left with five seconds left. Maddox rushed for 81 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Alberto Mendoza completed 23 of 30 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown, with Jordan Allen catching 10 passes for 99 yards. Allen hauled in Mendoza’s scoring pass. Duke’s Nate Sheppard, who entered the game fourth nationally in rushing, gained 99 yards on the ground and scored twice. He also had 91 receiving yards. Penalties proved costly for the Blue Devils. Duke was flagged six times for 71 yards, and third-down penalties helped keep both of Georgia Tech’s first-half touchdown drives alive. A 15-yard personal foul also aided the Yellow Jackets’ decisive drive. Georgia Tech improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in ACC play. The win came after the Yellow Jackets let a 20-10 lead slip away against Stanford and snapped a six-game losing streak against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents dating to last season. Duke fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Georgia Tech is scheduled to visit Virginia Tech next Saturday.
