Oakland Roots leave Coliseum after one season as home venue

The Roots’ Oct. 10 match was their last at the Oakland Coliseum, where the club began playing in 2025. The team plans to host future home games at the former Raiders practice facility in Alameda.

Oakland Roots leave Coliseum after one season as home venue
The Oakland Roots played their final game at the Oakland Coliseum on Saturday, Oct. 10, closing a brief chapter at a venue long associated with the city’s sports history. The soccer club moved to the Coliseum in 2025, but said this season would be its last there. The Roots cited operating costs and a lack of control over the venue as reasons the stadium was not a good fit for the team. For supporters in the stands, the farewell carried memories of more than soccer. Maurice Greer, a Roots fan and longtime Oakland sports supporter, said he had held Raiders season tickets for 15 years in the Black Hole, Section 105, Row 27. He returned to the Coliseum for Roots matches and joined supporter groups after the team moved in. Greer and other supporters marched on the field before the game. He described the moment as a chance to “kick up the dirt” one last time. Alphonso Guevara, president of the nonprofit Oakland Forever and an Oakland sports fan since 1995, also came to say goodbye. He said the Coliseum held good memories and plans to keep supporting the Roots. The team expects to play its home games at the former Raiders practice facility in Alameda. Guevara said he sees a promising future for the club, pointing to a fan base he believes is growing. The departure comes after Oakland fans have repeatedly watched professional teams leave the city. For Roots supporters, the move means the end of one home ground—but not, they hope, of the club’s place in the community.
