Burton’s late 3 lifts Golden State to 2-0 semifinal lead over Las Vegas
Veronica Burton had taken just two shots before the biggest moment of the night. With the score tied and less than a minute left Wednesday at Chase Center, she made her third count. Burton’s 3-pointer with 41.5 seconds remaining put the Golden State Valkyries ahead 79-76, and they held on for an 83-81 win over the Las Vegas Aces. The victory gave Golden State a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five WNBA semifinal series, leaving the team one win from the Finals. The shot came after Las Vegas erased a 17-point deficit to tie the game at 76. Gabby Williams passed to Burton beyond the arc, where Aces star A’ja Wilson had left her room by sagging back toward the paint. Burton took the open look and sank it. “I held my breath the whole time the ball was in the air,” teammate Tiffany Hayes said after the game. Hayes led Golden State with 21 points. Coach Natalie Nakase also made defensive adjustments as the Valkyries worked to contain the Aces and preserve their lead, before Las Vegas’ rally set up the tense finish. Golden State can close out the series with one more win. The 83-81 result keeps the Valkyries within reach of their first trip to the WNBA Finals, while Las Vegas must win to extend the matchup.
