Golden State earns first WNBA Finals trip with overtime win over Las Vegas
The Golden State Valkyries are headed to their first WNBA Finals after rallying to beat the Las Vegas Aces 87-77 in overtime Friday at Michelob ULTRA Arena and complete a three-game semifinal sweep. Golden State trailed by nine at halftime and fell behind by as many as 11 early in the second half. A 17-0 run in the third quarter put the Valkyries in front for the first time, but Las Vegas regained a six-point lead in the final three minutes. Golden State answered with an 8-0 run to force overtime, where it outscored the Aces 16-6. Gabby Williams scored 16 points, including eight in overtime, to help seal the win. Kayla Thornton led the Valkyries with 18 points and nine rebounds; Kiah Stokes added 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. A’ja Wilson led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds for Las Vegas. The Valkyries will face the Atlanta Dream, who also swept their semifinal series, defeating the New York Liberty. Golden State won all three regular-season meetings with Atlanta, played between June 24 and July 4. Game 1 of the best-of-seven Finals is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Pacific time Saturday, Oct. 17, at Chase Center in San Francisco. Golden State has home-court advantage, with Games 1 and 2, and Games 5 and 7 if needed, set for its home floor. The Finals berth marks a rapid rise for the franchise. The Valkyries reached the playoffs in their inaugural 2025 season but lost in the first round to the Minnesota Lynx. They now stand four wins from a championship in their second year.
