Warfield security guard killed after Friday-night show; staff recount panic and gunfire
A security guard who worked at San Francisco’s Warfield theater was fatally shot near the venue early Saturday after a chaotic Friday-night event, according to staff accounts and police information. The San Francisco medical examiner identified the victim as Ulysses Tykee Davis, 47, of Contra Costa County. Colleagues said he went by “Bear” and worked security at the theater. Police said officers responded at about 1 a.m. to the 900 block of Market Street and found a man with a gunshot wound. He died at a hospital, and the department’s homicide unit is investigating. Four Warfield employees described a rush of people fleeing the venue shortly before the shooting. A bartender said coworkers were screaming in the lobby around 12:45 a.m. and people were pushing over one another, shouting that they could not breathe. Staff said a chemical irritant, which some described as bear mace, had been released inside. Bartenders recounted people coughing and covering their faces, and one worker said a person swung at her before a security guard pulled her away. About 15 minutes later, two bartenders said they heard gunshots near the lobby and dropped to the floor. Staff messages sent shortly after 1 a.m. also referred to shots outside. Two bartenders said four workers hid in a locked office. A man who said he witnessed the shooting told the outlet that he saw a woman take a handgun from another woman near the box office. He said the woman pointed it in his direction, then fired after he ran and hit the ground. He saw a security guard near the entrance had been shot, he said. Police have not confirmed that account. The witness said he later saw officers detain a woman, but not the person he believed had fired the gun. Police have not announced an arrest or released information about a suspect. Goldenvoice, the Warfield’s management company, did not respond to a request for comment, according to the published report. The event was an 18-and-over show associated with filming for the reality series “Baddies USA Chapter 3.” The Warfield lists its capacity as 2,250; three bartenders estimated fewer than 1,000 people attended. The shooting also disrupted other events at the theater. A rally featuring U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders scheduled for Saturday was moved to the Curran Theatre, and the Warfield listed Tuesday’s “Hokus Pokus Live!” performance as canceled. Staff members mourned Davis in workplace messages and described him as well-liked. One bartender said security workers were among the lowest-paid employees but were responsible for protecting staff and concertgoers. “It just is heartbreaking that they’re no longer with us,” another said.
