Fleet Week geofence will bar Waymo pickups and drop-offs across parts of San Francisco
San Francisco will restrict Waymo service in waterfront neighborhoods and throughout the Presidio during Fleet Week, citing pedestrian safety and congestion. The limits run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday; Uber and Lyft service can continue as usual.
San Francisco will limit Waymo pickups and drop-offs in parts of the waterfront and Marina neighborhoods during Fleet Week, as the city prepares for large crowds and increased traffic from Oct. 9 to 11, 2026.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s geofenced restrictions will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The agency said the boundaries are intended to reduce congestion and protect pedestrians near the waterfront. Waymo vehicles will also be barred from operating anywhere in the Presidio during the weekend.
The restricted area’s northern edge includes Marina Boulevard, Fort Mason, Aquatic Park and Fisherman’s Wharf. Other boundaries include Lyon Street between Marina Boulevard and Lombard Street; Lombard between Lyon and Leavenworth streets; and North Point Street between Leavenworth and the Embarcadero. The Embarcadero is included between Bay Street and Fisherman’s Wharf.
Additional restricted stretches include Van Ness Avenue between Lombard and Broadway, Bay Street between Leavenworth and the Embarcadero, and the Embarcadero between Bay Street and Broadway.
The restrictions apply to Waymo, not all ride-hailing services: human-driven Uber and Lyft vehicles may continue operating as usual, according to the city’s guidance. Officials are urging Fleet Week visitors to take public transit. BART, the San Francisco Bay Ferry and Muni plan to provide extra service.
The decision follows traffic disruptions involving Waymo vehicles at major gatherings, including San Francisco’s July 4 fireworks. Autonomous vehicles were not reported to have caused major gridlock at later events such as Outside Lands and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.
