Marin sheriff identifies victims in fatal shooting near Mill Valley
Authorities say retired SFPD Deputy Chief Annie Mannix and her 24-year-old daughter, Katie, were killed Sunday at a home on Strawberry Circle. Investigators believe Annie’s estranged husband, retired SFPD Sgt. Kevin Mannix, shot them before taking his own life.
A retired San Francisco police leader and her adult daughter were killed Sunday in a shooting at a home on Strawberry Circle near Mill Valley, in what Marin County investigators describe as a suspected double murder-suicide.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as Annie Mannix, 65, and her daughter Katie Mannix, 24. Investigators said 68-year-old Kevin Mannix, Annie’s estranged husband, shot and killed them before taking his own life.
“At this early stage in the preliminary investigation, this appears to be a double murder-suicide,” sheriff’s department spokesman Miguel Almaguer said. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, saying the investigation is ongoing.
A son-in-law was inside the home when the gunfire began, neighbors said. He escaped to a nearby residence and called 911 shortly after 5 p.m. His wife, who had been hiding in a bedroom, later escaped through a window and joined him, according to authorities. Dispatch audio included a report of six to nine shots and later described three people down inside the home.
Annie Mannix was a trailblazer in the San Francisco Police Department: She was its first female SWAT member and later became a deputy chief. She retired in 2021. Kevin Mannix retired as an SFPD sergeant in 2018 after 27 years with the department.
The deaths have shaken former colleagues and neighbors. Former SFPD interim Chief Toney Chaplin said the family’s loss and the violence of the incident left those who knew them in shock. Neighbors have placed flowers outside the home on the ordinarily quiet street.
The sheriff’s office said formal autopsy results were pending. People experiencing a mental health or suicide crisis can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
