Man dies after scooter pursuit ends at SoMa bus shelter; witnesses describe police tackle
A man died Monday after fleeing San Francisco police on a scooter near Mission and Eighth streets. Police said he struck a street fixture; witnesses described a gray sedan cutting him off and a man tackling him into a Muni shelter pole.
A man died Monday after a police pursuit on a scooter ended at Mission and Eighth streets in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, with witnesses and police offering different accounts of how he was injured.
San Francisco police said officers spotted the man near the intersection at about 11:24 a.m. and tried to arrest him because he was wanted on a warrant. He fled on a scooter and “collided with a street fixture,” the department said. Officers provided aid, and paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Three witnesses described a gray sedan chasing the scooter down Mission Street, then cutting across its path. They said the scooter rider had been traveling against traffic before the car blocked him. A man who got out of the sedan tackled the rider, witnesses said, and the man’s head struck the metal pole of a Muni bus shelter. One witness likened the move to a football tackle.
Six witnesses told the same news organization the rider was left bleeding on the ground as officers tried to help him. Police did not say whether the gray sedan was an unmarked police vehicle. A department spokesperson also declined to address the witnesses’ accounts, citing an open investigation.
The man’s name and the reason for the warrant had not been released. Police cordoned off Mission Street between Seventh and Eighth streets as investigators photographed the scene and marked the pavement. A medical examiner’s office van was also there.
The competing accounts leave unanswered questions about the moments before the man was fatally injured and the role of the person who emerged from the sedan. The investigation was ongoing Monday.
