Oakland family remembers Mackayla Paige after fatal downtown shooting
Mackayla Paige, a 29-year-old reality television personality known as “Kash,” was shot and killed early Sunday in downtown Oakland, prompting family members to remember her ambitions and call for attention to her life rather than videos circulating after the shooting. Oakland police said Paige was shot at about 1:30 a.m. near 14th and Harrison streets. She was taken to a hospital, where she died. A woman from Richmond was arrested in connection with the shooting, but police have not publicly identified her or announced a motive. The investigation is ongoing. Paige appeared on online reality shows including “The Young and the Reckless” and “Roommates.” The streaming platform Now That’s TV described her as a beloved member of its network in a tribute. Her cousin, Azima King, said the family was grieving and angry. She recalled Paige as outgoing and driven, with hopes of building a career in entertainment. King also objected to negative portrayals of her cousin online, saying Paige was a model who wanted to act and had encouraged others. Videos shared on social media appeared to show a confrontation shortly before the shooting, but authorities have not publicly detailed what led to the gunfire. King urged people not to define Paige by those final moments. A memorial has grown near the shooting scene as police continue their investigation.
