Police investigate remains found in bag at downtown Portland encampment cleanup site
Human remains were found Tuesday at a downtown Portland site where a city-contracted team had cleared an encampment the day before. Portland police homicide investigators are handling the case; officials have not disclosed what was found or identified anyone involved.
Human remains found Tuesday at a downtown Portland encampment cleanup site were inside a garbage bag, police confirmed. The Portland Police Bureau’s homicide unit is investigating.
A city rapid-response team cleared an encampment Monday on Southwest Harvey Milk Street near Naito Parkway, police spokesperson Mike Benner said. The team returned Tuesday after being called back about additional personal belongings at the site.
At about 9:15 a.m., team members found what appeared to be human remains and contacted police and the medical examiner, officials said. Benner declined to provide further details about the remains, saying the homicide unit was investigating.
Police have not released information about the identity of the person or the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
