Two people hospitalized after gunfire outside Mesa Halloween event
A teenage boy and a man were wounded in a shooting outside Versalles Reception Hall early Saturday after a dispute at the entrance, Mesa police said. An off-duty officer and a security guard returned fire; separate agencies are investigating the two shootings.
Two people were hospitalized with injuries police described as non-life-threatening after gunfire erupted outside a Halloween party at a Mesa reception hall early Saturday, Oct. 10.
The shooting began around 1 a.m. near Main Street and Stapley Drive, outside Versalles Reception Hall. Mesa police said a teenage boy tried to enter the event but was turned away. Investigators say he then pointed a gun at a security guard and fired.
An off-duty Mesa police officer was working at the event. The guard and officer returned fire as the teen ran toward a vehicle, police said. He crossed Main Street before an on-duty Mesa officer stopped him. The teen dropped his gun and was taken into custody, according to police. He was shot several times and taken to a hospital.
A man inside the vehicle the teen was running toward was also hit by gunfire and hospitalized. Police said the off-duty officer, security guard and bystanders were not injured.
“When the gunshots rang out, people started running out,” Mesa police Detective Jose Aguirre said, adding that he could imagine a large number of people were at the event.
Scottsdale police will investigate the off-duty officer’s shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. Mesa police are investigating the shooting of the security guard as an aggravated assault case.
The incident was reported as Maricopa County’s 37th officer-involved shooting of the year and Arizona’s 66th, according to the police information provided.
