Temple investigates reported sexual assault at University Village
A sexual assault reported at an off-campus apartment complex in North Philadelphia is being handled through Temple University’s student conduct process. The university said it found no imminent risk to the broader campus community and did not issue an alert.
Temple University is investigating a reported sexual assault at University Village, a privately managed apartment complex on the 1700 block of North 10th Street, after the incident was reported to have occurred around 2:30 a.m. Oct. 10.
The university’s public safety crime log classified the reported incident as rape. Temple said it is responding under its Student Conduct Code, a university process separate from any law enforcement investigation. Officials said students decide whether they want to pursue a criminal investigation, and the university respects that choice. Temple declined to say whether the person who reported the assault chose to pursue a criminal case.
After reviewing the information available to it, the university said it did not determine that the incident posed an imminent risk to the campus community. No campus alert was issued. Temple said the report was included in its publicly available crime log and is being investigated under university policies.
Temple student Anna Shelly said she was upset that she had not learned of the incident sooner. “This is horrible, disgusting acts that are happening to people and are people’s reality’s, women’s reality’s,” she said, calling for the subject to remain part of public discussion.
University President John Fry said students reporting sexual assault can receive support whether or not they choose to file a police report. Temple said it can connect students with a victim advocate to help them navigate that process and offers other campus resources.
The university also said a Sexual Assault Advisory Group of students, faculty and staff, announced Oct. 3, is reviewing its practices and will make recommendations to administrators. Its work will include examining university policies, communications and coordination with the Philadelphia Police Department in sexual assault cases.
