GIANT stores stay open as cyberattack disables online ordering

GIANT stores across the Philadelphia region remain open during normal business hours, but customers have been unable to use the grocery chain’s website and app since Monday, Oct. 12, after a cybersecurity incident affected its parent company, Ahold Delhaize.

As of Thursday, Oct. 15, the GIANT website displayed a notice that its online services were down and that orders placed through the website or app would be refunded. Customers could still seek delivery through Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats, according to the company’s notice.

Ahold Delhaize said Monday it was dealing with a security issue in its network. In an update the following day, the company said it had taken some systems offline as a precaution while teams assessed and worked to limit the problem. It said it was beginning a controlled relaunch of certain systems and working with law enforcement as the investigation continued.

The company has not identified where the attack originated, said whether a group claimed responsibility or provided a timeline for restoring the affected online services. The disruption has also affected online services for Ahold Delhaize-owned Stop & Shop and Hannaford, according to local reporting.

While the outage has interrupted digital shopping and ordering, the company has said its stores, pharmacies and fuel stations remain open. It has not reported that store refrigeration or other in-person operations were affected.
