Fairhill fire claims second life after e-bike battery ignites rowhome

A 22-year-old woman has died from injuries suffered in a fire that killed her 3-year-old daughter in Philadelphia’s Fairhill neighborhood, city officials said Wednesday, Oct. 14.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday on the 3300 block of D Street. Investigators determined that a lithium-ion battery used for an e-bike sparked the blaze, officials said. There were no working smoke detectors in the home.

Two other relatives were injured: the woman’s 24-year-old sister and her 5-year-old son. Their conditions were not provided.

The deaths underscore the deadly risks of a residential fire involving a rechargeable battery, while the absence of working smoke detectors left the home without an early-warning system, officials said.
