COATESVILLE, Pa. — A 15-year-old accused of shooting a 14-year-old boy in Coatesville will be prosecuted as an adult, police said. The teenager, identified by police as Zaid-An Butcher, faces charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault.

Police said 11 shots were fired shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday near East Chestnut Street and North 8th Avenue. First responders found the wounded boy about a block away, on East Diamond Street, with a gunshot wound to his torso. He was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and remained hospitalized in fair condition. Police said they expected him to recover.

Investigators said Butcher left the area in a vehicle with 18-year-old Jonah Riggs. Officers found the vehicle in the King of Prussia Mall parking lot about an hour later and arrested both. Police said the two suspects had not posted bail. Riggs faces a charge of carrying a firearm without a license.

Detectives are still working to establish what led to the shooting. Residents near the scene described hearing gunfire and voiced concern about violence affecting people who live and walk in the neighborhood.

“It’s unfortunate, the violence in Coatesville. It needs to come to an end,” resident Brykeim McGibboney said. Another neighbor, Randy Jackson, said residents worry about children and older people passing through the area, and that gunfire has become familiar to some in the neighborhood.

The charges are allegations; the case will proceed through the courts.
