Josh Jacobs rejoins Packers practice, eligible to face Detroit after six-game absence

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Josh Jacobs returned to Green Bay Packers practice Wednesday for the first time since being placed on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list. The running back missed the team’s first six games and is eligible to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Jacobs told reporters he was “remorseful and sorry” for putting the team in a difficult position. He also said he was trying to learn and grow from the experience, describing how a decision made in a few seconds can have lasting consequences.

The case stems from Jacobs’ May 23 arrest at his home. He was accused of throwing his girlfriend to the ground and damaging her phone. Jacobs later pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery and criminal damage to property charges as part of a plea agreement.

A judge fined Jacobs $1,000 for the battery charge. The property-damage charge was placed under deferred judgment and will be dismissed after a year if he commits no further crimes, avoids contact with the victim, completes 12 months of supervision and a battery course, and pays restitution.

The legal case has also prompted a dispute over public access to police records. The Hobart-Lawrence Police Department said it had identified records that could be released with redactions, but is temporarily holding them after attorneys for people named in the records said they would seek court orders to block disclosure. Jacobs has separately sued to prevent release of some materials, citing concerns about the victim’s privacy and security details about his home.

The Packers’ practice announcement gives Jacobs a path back to the field, though his return to the lineup is not guaranteed. Green Bay is scheduled to face Detroit on Sunday.
