Cronenworth’s go-ahead homer lifts San Diego past Milwaukee in Game 3
SAN DIEGO — Jake Cronenworth broke a tie with a home run, and shortstop Xander Bogaerts turned a game-ending double play as the San Diego Padres beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 on Tuesday night, avoiding elimination in the National League Division Series. Milwaukee leads the best-of-five series 2-1. Game 4 is scheduled for 9 p.m. Wednesday at Petco Park; if needed, Game 5 will be played Friday in Milwaukee. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado drove in early runs for San Diego, which never trailed. Cronenworth’s homer supplied the decisive margin in a tense game against the major leagues’ best regular-season team. The Padres had to finish without closer Mason Miller, who was placed on the paternity list about 45 minutes before the first pitch. Michael King, who started Game 1 and pitched five innings two days earlier, took over for the final two innings and earned his first save since 2023 — and his first in the postseason. King faced trouble in the ninth when William Contreras and Brice Turang drew one-out walks. Christian Yelich then hit a sharp grounder up the middle. Bogaerts fielded it on a short hop, touched second base and threw to first to complete the double play and end the game. Contreras homered and had three hits for Milwaukee. Yelich drove in his first postseason run since 2018 with a seventh-inning single, but the Brewers left 11 runners on base and did not take the lead. The loss extended their postseason road losing streak to 12 games, dating to the 2018 NL Championship Series. Neither team had announced a starter for Game 4.
