Milwaukee stands one win from NLCS berth as Brewers face Padres in San Diego
The Brewers carry a 2-0 series lead into Tuesday’s Game 3 at Petco Park, where a win would send Milwaukee to the National League Championship Series. Dustin May is scheduled to start against Nick Pivetta, with first pitch set for 8:30 p.m.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a chance to close out their National League Division Series against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night, taking a 2-0 lead into Game 3 at Petco Park.
A victory would send Milwaukee to the National League Championship Series. If San Diego wins, the teams will meet again Wednesday in Game 4; a deciding Game 5, if needed, would be played Friday at American Family Field. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
The Brewers built their lead with two close wins at home. Jackson Chourio and William Contreras hit home runs in Milwaukee’s 3-2 Game 1 victory. In Game 2, Chourio delivered a two-run walk-off single in the ninth inning, lifting the Brewers to a 4-3 win after they had trailed 3-2 and were one out from defeat. The hit came against Padres closer Mason Miller.
Milwaukee right-hander Dustin May is set to start Game 3. He finished the regular season 7-9 with a 4.70 ERA, but had stronger results against San Diego: in three starts against the Padres this season, he recorded a 1.23 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 22 innings.
May’s recent form is less reassuring. After allowing three earned runs in his first 13 innings with Milwaukee, following his acquisition from St. Louis, he went 1-2 with a 7.61 ERA over his final eight outings.
San Diego will start right-hander Nick Pivetta, who went 3-2 with a 2.86 ERA after missing nearly five months with a right elbow injury. Since returning in September, Pivetta has a 1.64 ERA. He did not face Milwaukee during the regular season.
The Brewers won four of six regular-season meetings with the Padres, including two of three in Milwaukee in May. San Diego took all three games in an August series at Petco Park, where Milwaukee now needs one win to advance.
Tuesday’s forecast also calls for unusually hot conditions. An early-October heat wave has brought an Extreme Heat Warning to the San Diego area, with daytime highs expected in the mid-90s. Temperatures should ease after sunset, and rain is not expected.
Milwaukee fans can gather for an official, free watch party at UW Credit Union Plaza outside American Family Field. The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is sold out. The team moved the Game 3 and potential Game 4 gatherings to the ballpark after initially planning them for Davidson Park and Greendale.
