Rested Wild Card Teams May Be Narrowing Division Series Gap

The 2026 MLB playoff schedule gives Wild Card winners more time to line up pitchers and recover before the Division Series, potentially weakening the advantage of higher seeds. The Brewers are the higher seed in a postseason series for the second straight year, as the format’s effects remain unsettled.

Rested Wild Card Teams May Be Narrowing Division Series Gap
The Milwaukee Brewers entered the 2026 postseason as the higher seed in a playoff series for the second consecutive year, but the advantage that once came with a top-two finish may be smaller under Major League Baseball’s current postseason schedule. The 12-team format, now in its fifth season, sends four division winners directly to the Division Series. The other division winner and three Wild Card teams in each league compete in best-of-three Wild Card series for the remaining spots. In the first eight Division Series played under the format, lower-seeded teams beat one of the league’s top two finishers five times. Results have tilted back toward the higher seeds over the past two seasons: they won six of the last eight Division Series. After Sunday’s second games, higher seeds had also won four of six games at home over the weekend. The expanded Wild Card round may help explain the shift. Unlike the former system, in which two Wild Card teams played a single elimination game, the current best-of-three series can give teams time to set their rotations. Three of the four Wild Card winners in 2026 advanced in two games and had an additional day off before the Division Series. That rest mattered for pitching plans. The Yankees had Gerrit Cole available on nine days’ rest for their opener against Tampa Bay. The White Sox used 2024 first-round pick Hagen Smith, who posted a 1.29 ERA in his 2026 major-league debut season, as an opener. Atlanta used Dylan Dodd to open its Saturday game and could have started ace Chris Sale on normal rest Sunday, but saved him for Game 3 at home. San Diego also had options despite projected Game 1 starter Walker Buehler being unavailable after going on the paternity list. Robbie Ray started Saturday, and Michael King was ready for Sunday’s Game 2 against Milwaukee. King retired the first 14 Brewers he faced. The schedule contrasts with the 2012-21 format, when Wild Card winners often reached the Division Series less than 48 hours after a winner-take-all game. Their best pitchers could be unavailable at the start of the next round. In the earlier system, 18 Wild Card game winners advanced to the Division Series; nine went on to win that series. Those totals are too small to establish that either format reliably favors one kind of team. In 2023, the Rangers and Diamondbacks reached the World Series as Wild Card teams, prompting complaints about postseason randomness. The Dodgers’ back-to-back championships in 2024 and 2025, by contrast, drew concern from some fans that the outcome was becoming too predictable. If MLB wants regular-season success to provide a stronger edge, a tighter postseason schedule could be one option. For now, the Brewers’ higher seed offers no guarantee: the extra recovery time available to Wild Card teams may help make October’s matchups less predictable.
