Chourio’s ninth-inning hit gives Milwaukee 4-3 win and 2-0 series lead
Jackson Chourio lined a two-run single with two outs in the ninth Sunday, completing Milwaukee’s comeback against San Diego. The Brewers head to San Diego with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five National League Division Series.
MILWAUKEE — Jackson Chourio drove in two runs with a ninth-inning single Sunday, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres and a 2-0 lead in their National League Division Series.
San Diego brought a 3-2 lead into the ninth and turned to reliever Mason Miller, who had retired the Brewers in order in the eighth. After a groundout to open the inning, Miller walked Christian Yelich and Sal Frelick. Andrew Vaughn then flied out, and pinch hitter Gary Sánchez drew a full-count walk to load the bases.
Chourio lined a 101.3 mph fastball up the middle. The ball got past second baseman Jake Cronenworth’s diving attempt and into center field, scoring Yelich and Frelick for the walk-off win.
The Padres took an early lead when Ty France drove in a run in the first inning. San Diego extended its advantage to 2-0 in the fifth, but Milwaukee answered with a run in the bottom half. The Padres added another run in the seventh; the Brewers scored once in the inning to make it 3-2, setting up the ninth-inning finish.
The win was Milwaukee’s second over San Diego in about 20 hours. The Padres had won 20 of their previous 23 games entering the postseason, and the back-to-back losses were their first since Sept. 1-2. The best-of-five series now moves to San Diego.
