CBS ends Tony Romo’s nine-year run after Milwaukee OWI case
MILWAUKEE — Tony Romo and CBS Sports have ended their nine-year partnership, the network announced Oct. 2, following the former NFL quarterback’s no-contest plea in a Milwaukee operating-while-intoxicated case. “CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways,” the network said in a statement. It thanked Romo for his contributions and wished him well. CBS said JJ Watt will continue working alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson on its top NFL broadcast team for the remainder of the season. Watt, a Pewaukee native and former University of Wisconsin star, has filled in for Romo this season. The network said its other broadcast teams would remain unchanged. Romo, a Wisconsin native, pleaded no contest last month to OWI in connection with his July arrest in Milwaukee. Online court records show his driver’s license will be revoked for six months and that he must pay a $784 fine, complete an alcohol assessment program and install an ignition interlock device in any vehicle he owns for one year. Records from the assessment program list Romo’s blood-alcohol concentration at 0.15. A search warrant said a blood sample was taken more than three hours after the traffic stop. The warrant also reported that a deputy detected a strong smell of alcohol on Romo’s breath; body-camera footage showed Romo telling the deputy he had consumed no drinks.
