SHOREWOOD, Wis. — Shorewood School District will not renew its football cooperative agreement with Messmer and Dominican high schools, ending the partnership after the 2027-28 school year. The district announced the decision Tuesday, Sept. 29, saying it followed discussions about falling participation and player safety. Dominican joined the co-op in 2025, and the current agreement covers the 2027-28 school year. Shorewood and Messmer established their football partnership in 2001. The team, known as “Messwood,” was described by the district as the first public-private high school football cooperative and later became the subject of a book and documentary. District staff will work with current players to identify opportunities in other team sports and extracurricular activities, officials said. Shorewood’s wrestling cooperative with Messmer is not affected and will continue.
