The Green Bay Packers avoided an 0-2 start Sunday, rallying for a 27-24 overtime victory over the New York Jets in rainy New Jersey after their defense and special teams rescued an offense that struggled for much of the game. The Packers lost receiver Jayden Reed to a serious neck injury on the second play. Reed was placed on a backboard and taken to a hospital. Right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele also left with a serious knee injury and was ruled out. The Packers did not immediately have a final assessment of either injury. Green Bay and New York exchanged punts on their opening three possessions before Packers quarterback Jordan Love connected with Marshawn Lloyd for a 6-yard touchdown in the second quarter. The score was Lloyd’s first NFL touchdown. The Jets answered with a 5-yard rushing touchdown by former Wisconsin Badgers running back Braelon Allen, sending the teams into halftime tied. New York took control in the third quarter with a 70-yard drive capped by Geno Smith’s 5-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Wilson. Early in the fourth, Lloyd fumbled at the Packers’ 16-yard line, but Green Bay’s defense held the Jets to a field goal rather than allowing a touchdown. The kick gave New York a 10-point lead with 11 minutes remaining. The Packers responded with a touchdown drive aided by a 38-yard pass-interference penalty against Jets cornerback Azareye’h Thomas. After officials negated a potential Love touchdown run following offsetting penalties, Love found Christian Watson for a 3-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to three. Green Bay’s defense forced another punt, and Skyy Moore returned it 63 yards to set up the Packers near midfield. The Packers could not reach the end zone, but Trey Smack tied the game with a 34-yard field goal. The Jets had a chance to win in regulation, but the Packers stopped Allen on fourth-and-1 from midfield with 1:11 remaining. Green Bay gained only five yards on its next possession, and Love was sacked while attempting a Hail Mary as regulation ended. In overtime, Green Bay’s defense sacked Smith twice and forced another punt. Lukas Van Ness, Brandon Cisse, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Barryn Sorrell each received credit for half a sack. The Packers then drove to the New York 8-yard line, where Smack ended the game with a 26-yard field goal. The victory put Green Bay at 1-1 and kept the team in the early NFC North race, but it came with major questions. The Packers’ offense was repeatedly disrupted by penalties, pressure and the weather, while the offensive line lost another starter. The defense, coordinated by Jonathan Gannon, has nevertheless delivered strong performances in each of the team’s first two games despite the absence of star pass rusher Micah Parsons. Green Bay now faces a short turnaround before hosting the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football.
