Wauwatosa plans to open Milwaukee County’s first social district on Oct. 29, allowing visitors to carry alcoholic drinks from participating bars and restaurants through designated streets and shops in the Village. The temporary program, called Sip Thursdays, is scheduled to operate on Thursdays through Dec. 19, except Thanksgiving. Participants can buy beer, wine or cocktails at approved businesses and bring them onto sidewalks and into participating retail stores, using compliant cups. The district covers portions of Harwood, Underwood, State and Wauwatosa avenues. Its boundaries run along Harwood Avenue from just north of Wauwatosa Avenue south across the Menomonee River to Harmonee Avenue; Underwood Avenue between State and Harmonee; State Street between Harmonee and Wauwatosa avenues; and Wauwatosa Avenue between Harmonee and State streets. The arrangement is a Temporary Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, or TDORA, which permits adults to drink in specified public spaces if beverages come from approved businesses and are served in the required cups. Similar districts operate in Manitowoc, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Neenah and Janesville. The Village’s Business Improvement District director, Maria Panno, said the program is intended to let people move between local businesses with a drink. Officials say the broader goal is to increase foot traffic and encourage visitors to spend more time shopping and dining in the area. Participating food and drink businesses include Cafe Hollander, Buckatabon, Ristorante Bartolotta dal 1993, Le Reve Cafe & Patisserie, Lucky Joe’s, The Ruby Tap, Draft & Vessel, The Village Cheese Shop and Arté Wine and Painting Studio. North 48, a bar expected to open in the Village before year’s end, is also listed. Participating retailers include Shop Privy, The Flannel Fox, Mooi, The Flower Lady, Little Geese Shop, Tabal Chocolate and Salamander. Program details are available through the Village of Wauwatosa.
