Waukesha district moves Lowell students after bed bugs found in two classrooms
Bed bugs were found in two classrooms at Lowell Elementary School in Waukesha, prompting the district to move students and inspect the building. Families were asked to check children’s clothing and belongings before and after school.
Students at Lowell Elementary School in Waukesha were being relocated Tuesday, Oct. 13, after bed bugs were found in two classrooms, Superintendent James Sebert said.
The district planned to assess the extent of the problem and decide whether further action was needed, Sebert said in an email. School officials said they would continue inspecting classrooms and bring in licensed pest-control specialists to treat rooms if appropriate.
In a letter sent to families Monday, Principal Marlene Figueroa asked caregivers to inspect students’ clothes, backpacks and other belongings before children leave for school and again when they return. Bed bugs can travel on personal items, the letter said.
The district emphasized that bed bugs are not evidence that a home, school or other public place is unclean. Their bites may cause itchy, swollen marks, but are not known to spread disease. The school said it would provide families with updates as it learned more.
Families with questions can contact the Waukesha County Health Department at 262-896-8430. The district also advised caregivers with medical concerns about a child to contact a doctor.
