Milwaukee man’s attorney seeks body-camera release after arrest involving force
MILWAUKEE — A Milwaukee family is seeking the release of body-camera footage and an investigation into the arrest of 24-year-old Nicholas Beamon, who his attorney says was struck in the head and suffered serious injuries during a police encounter Oct. 8. The traffic stop took place near Palmer Street and Keefe Avenue shortly before 6:30 p.m. Milwaukee police said officers stopped the vehicle for a license-plate violation. Two passengers, both 20-year-old women, and Beamon were taken into custody, according to police. Police said in an email that two passengers would not identify themselves and that Beamon had a firearm in the front pocket of his sweatshirt. Officers tried to explain that he was being detained for their safety, police said. The department also said Beamon became combative, pulled away and repeatedly reached toward the pocket, including after he was handcuffed. Civil rights attorney B’Ivory LaMarr said Beamon legally possessed the gun and told officers he had it. LaMarr said Beamon was hit several times in the head and has gone to an emergency room twice, with specialist appointments to follow. Video obtained by a local television station appears to show an officer searching Beamon’s sweatshirt pocket as he turns. Seconds later, Beamon and officers are on the ground, and a third officer appears to strike him repeatedly. LaMarr called the force unjustified and asked police to release the full body-camera footage promptly, saying it could clarify how the occupants were removed from the vehicle and what happened during the arrest. Beamon was held for less than a day, LaMarr said. As of Oct. 12, he had not been charged. Police said potential charges for all three people taken into custody would be referred to the district attorney. Police had not responded to requests for an interview and additional information by the evening of Oct. 12. The department’s account and the attorney’s claims have not been independently reconciled in the information available.
