MPS trims one teacher at French Immersion, prompting parent and student protest
Milwaukee French Immersion School families and staff rallied at district headquarters Oct. 12 after Milwaukee Public Schools cut one teaching position. The district cited lower-than-projected enrollment in K4; the school’s PTA president said the change will disrupt four classrooms.
MILWAUKEE — Parents, teachers and students from Milwaukee French Immersion School rallied outside Milwaukee Public Schools headquarters on the morning of Oct. 12, urging the district to restore a teaching position it recently eliminated.
Protesters chanted against the cuts. Sarah Koffi-Kutodzo, the school’s Parent Teacher Association president, said families want the district to reinstate the teacher and argued the reduction conflicts with MPS goals to strengthen classrooms, improve student performance and attract families.
Koffi-Kutodzo said a district-ordered audit last spring prompted the school to hire additional staff. But after enrollment came in 12 students below projections, MPS reversed course and cut one teacher, she said.
The staffing change affects four classrooms, according to Koffi-Kutodzo. The school must reduce its three K4 sections to two and reassign another teacher to cover the classroom left without a teacher, she said.
MPS said the three K4 sections had an average enrollment of 14 students, below district guidelines and not financially sustainable. Combining them into two sections will bring average enrollment to about 20 students, which the district said meets its guidelines.
The district also said each K4 classroom has a teacher and a paraprofessional, maintaining one adult for every 10 students. Koffi-Kutodzo said the reconfiguration remains disruptive for the school community.
