Milwaukee teen shot by officer identified as Jouthem Rodriguez Lacourt
Jouthem Rodriguez Lacourt, 17, was shot in the leg Wednesday night and hospitalized with injuries police described as not life-threatening. His father said he has not yet been able to see or speak with his son as investigators examine the shooting.
A 17-year-old shot by a Milwaukee police officer Wednesday night has been identified by his father as Jouthem Rodriguez Lacourt. The teen was wounded in the leg and taken to a hospital with injuries police said were not life-threatening.
Lacourt’s father said he does not know where his son got the rifle that police say he was carrying. He also said he has not yet been able to see or speak with him.
Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said officers were sent to the 1500 block of West Greenfield Avenue at about 9:21 p.m. after a report of gunfire. Residents flagged down officers and pointed toward people leaving the area on dirt bikes, police said. Officers followed the group to an alley in the 700 block of West Scott Street.
While investigating, officers saw a masked person carrying a rifle, according to police. The person ran, and an officer repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon, Norman said. The officer then fired. Police said they recovered the rifle beside the injured teen.
Investigators are working to determine whether the rifle was stolen and whether it had been fired. The case will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of possible charges. Police said video of the incident will be released under department procedures.
The officer, 26, has more than three years of service and has been placed on administrative duty, a standard step after an officer-involved shooting. The department’s Homicide Division is investigating.
“There are still a lot of questions unanswered at this time, but we will get to the bottom of this,” Norman said.
