Gas leak after SUV struck construction area sparks fire at Froedtert garage
An 88-year-old man was injured and eight other vehicles caught fire at Froedtert Hospital’s parking garage. Hospital officials closed Garage 1 while crews assess the damage.
A fire that spread across nine vehicles in Froedtert Hospital’s parking garage began after an 88-year-old driver went through a construction area and damaged his SUV, the Wauwatosa Fire Department said.
The crash caused gasoline to leak from the vehicle, and the fuel ignited, according to the department. The man was hurt while escaping the flames and went to the hospital emergency room for treatment. His condition was not available Thursday.
The fire broke out Wednesday in the first floor of Garage 1, where smoke filled the parking area. D’Shaunta Stewart, who had been at the hospital for an appointment, said she was leaving from the second floor when she saw heavy black smoke and ran to get out.
Stewart described hearing what sounded like explosions as the fire spread. She said she saw the injured man outside the burning area and made it to safety with her car undamaged.
Froedtert officials said Garage 1 would remain closed until further notice while crews assess the damage. The closure affects parking at the busy hospital campus in Wauwatosa; no further details about the damage or reopening timeline were provided.
