Search warrant links Southridge Mall jewelry burglaries to multistate theft investigation
GREENDALE, Wis. — Two jewelry-store burglaries at Southridge Mall are part of a five-theft investigation spanning Wisconsin, Illinois and New York, according to a search warrant filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court. The warrant says the Macy’s at Southridge Mall was broken into in April, with a sledgehammer used to gain entry. Investigators list losses of $448,378 from that store and $146,404 from the mall’s JCPenney. The other reported burglaries targeted a JCPenney in Madison, where $100,000 in jewelry was taken; a JCPenney in Staten Island, New York, with losses of $1.5 million; and Rogers & Hollands in Vernon Hills, Illinois, where $263,888.92 was reported stolen. The warrant puts the combined losses at $2,458,678. Investigators used Flock camera records to help identify vehicles associated with the burglaries and trace registered owners and rental information, according to the warrant. DNA collected at two crime scenes reportedly matched the same suspect. The warrant names a man investigators suspect of involvement and says he is on parole. He has not been criminally charged, so his identity is not being reported. The allegations have not been tested in court.
