Shuttle driver hospitalized after assault near Fiserv Forum; owner weighs ending service
A 63-year-old shuttle driver was knocked unconscious in an assault reported Sept. 13 on West Juneau Avenue, Milwaukee police said. The bar owner who employs him is adding cameras and considering whether to keep serving the area.
A 63-year-old shuttle driver was hospitalized after an assault near Fiserv Forum, and the owner of the business he works for is considering ending shuttle service in the area over safety concerns.
Milwaukee police said the assault was reported at about 10:14 p.m. Sept. 13 on West Juneau Avenue. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment. John Roots, owner of Natty Oaks, said the driver lost consciousness and spent several hours at the hospital; he was still experiencing pain and bruising, Roots said.
A second Natty Oaks driver, who asked not to be identified, told local television station WISN she saw the incident. She said a 21-year-old man approached her shuttle, yelled and threatened her. When her co-worker came over, she said, the man attacked him. She also said the suspect had removed a manhole cover and sat in the opening before the assault.
Police officers saw the attack and intervened, the witness said. Officers arrested the 21-year-old and took him to a hospital for medical clearance, according to police. Police said he also assaulted the officer who transported him. That officer was treated and released. The 21-year-old remained in custody, and charges were pending as of Sept. 30.
Roots said the incident has him questioning whether it makes sense to keep running shuttles near the arena. He is investing in cameras for the company’s vehicles and called for better security around Fiserv Forum and more investment in mental health resources.
Milwaukee police and Fiserv Forum had not responded to requests for comment about security outside major events as of the evening of Sept. 30.
