South Florida probe alleges cocaine shipments moved by unsuspecting freight carriers
Twenty-five people have been charged in a South Florida drug investigation that authorities say uncovered a network moving cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamine and other controlled substances into the region from California. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the results of “Operation Ice Breaker” at a news conference Tuesday, Oct. 13. The investigation focused on activity in Palm Beach, Broward and St. Lucie counties. Authorities said the drugs were transported by long-haul freight carriers who did not know what their loads contained. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office began investigating in March after social media activity led investigators to a local distributor, officials said. Undercover officers made controlled purchases and conducted surveillance, eventually identifying what authorities described as an organized trafficking network. Investigators identified Ariel Fernandez-Alonso as a major supplier. Officials said he told them he received 50 to 60 kilograms of cocaine every 15 days. Authorities said investigators found more than 40 kilograms of cocaine as Fernandez-Alonso and associates were breaking down a pallet. Search warrants carried out over the weekend across the three counties resulted in the seizure of at least 45 kilograms of cocaine, along with oxycodone and fentanyl pills, officials said. Of the 25 people charged, 19 have been arrested and six are still being sought. Fernandez-Alonso faces charges of cocaine trafficking and unlawful use of a two-way communications device. Other defendants face drug-trafficking charges and allegations of conspiracy to commit racketeering. Several trafficking counts carry mandatory minimum sentences of 15 years if defendants are convicted. Uthmeier said the operation disrupted an enterprise distributing drugs in local communities. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw also praised the coordinated investigation. The allegations have not been proven in court, and those charged are presumed innocent unless convicted.
