Miami Gardens man charged after BMW rolls over during Palmetto Expressway pursuit
A 21-year-old Miami Gardens man was arrested after a Florida Highway Patrol pursuit ended with his BMW overturning in a ditch off the Palmetto Expressway in Miami Lakes early Monday, Oct. 12, according to an FHP arrest report. The report identifies the driver as Brendley Jerome. He faces charges of fleeing and eluding an officer at high speed and excessive speeding. A trooper spotted the silver BMW traveling about 120 mph southbound near Northwest 57th Avenue at about 4:13 a.m., the report says. After the trooper activated emergency lights and siren, the driver allegedly accelerated to more than 130 mph and made evasive maneuvers. The BMW weaved across lanes and nearly struck a semi-truck as it approached Northwest 154th Street, according to the report. The driver tried to take the exit but lost control on a curve, sending the car off the roadway and into a ditch. The trooper slowed before driving the patrol vehicle into the ditch and making contact with the BMW, the report says. The trooper then ordered the occupants out at gunpoint. One passenger climbed through a rear passenger-side window, while Jerome exited through the rear windshield. Additional troopers helped remove a second passenger through a window. Fire rescue crews took Jerome and both passengers to Palmetto General Hospital. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, and the trooper was not injured, FHP said. Jerome was medically cleared and taken to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. As of Tuesday morning, Jerome remained in custody. Jail records listed his total bond as “to be set.”
