Palm Beach County deputies fatally shoot man after chase and roadside standoff
A man sought in connection with a Lake Worth robbery died after a chase ended in a crash on Jog Road. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said deputies tried three times to subdue him with less-lethal tactics before he was shot.
A man died Tuesday after Palm Beach County deputies fatally shot him following a chase and standoff in an unincorporated area of the county, authorities said.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Florida Highway Patrol troopers found the man driving a black Chevrolet pickup Tuesday afternoon. Authorities said he was suspected in a strong-arm robbery reported Monday night in Lake Worth.
The pursuit ended when the truck crashed on Jog Road between Woolbright Road and Grand Isle Drive. The driver then remained in a standoff with first responders, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies tried to take him into custody using less-lethal tactics, but ultimately shot him, according to the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said deputies made three attempts to use those measures, without effect. He said the man yelled at officers, “You’re gonna have to kill me.”
First responders provided life-saving treatment after the shooting, authorities said. The man’s identity had not been publicly released.
Authorities said he had a lengthy criminal history, including prior cases involving carjacking, assault, drug possession and sales, kidnapping, trespassing, disorderly conduct and a hit-and-run causing severe damage.
The Florida Highway Patrol initially said the pickup was stolen. The sheriff’s office later corrected that information, saying the man was driving his own vehicle.
The circumstances of the fatal shooting were under investigation.
