Fort Lauderdale fire leaves family of nine without a livable home or renters coverage
A Fort Lauderdale family of nine is displaced after a Monday-night fire left their home too damaged to live in and destroyed their belongings. The fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. Oct. 12 at a house in the 1500 block of Northwest 19th Avenue. Carlene Mojor, who lives there with six children ages 1 to 12 and two other adults, said she saw flames coming from a back bedroom. The fire spread toward the front of the house. The structure is still standing, but the interior sustained extensive damage. Mojor said the family lost clothing, furniture and other possessions. The cause of the fire has not been determined. The American Red Cross is providing temporary accommodations for a few nights as the family works out its next steps. Mojor said the landlord is trying to find them another home. The family does not have renters insurance to help replace its belongings, leaving it to rebuild without that coverage as it searches for permanent housing.
