Wisconsin native Kevin Zeitler joins Packers as Jayden Reed is ruled out for season
The 36-year-old guard, a Waukesha native and former Badger, is the latest veteran brought in to steady Green Bay’s struggling offensive line. Receiver Jayden Reed will have season-ending neck surgery after getting hurt against the Jets.
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Packers are turning to a familiar face to help stabilize their struggling offensive line: Kevin Zeitler, a 36-year-old guard from Waukesha who played for the University of Wisconsin before beginning his NFL career in 2012.
The move came Wednesday as Green Bay also announced that receiver Jayden Reed will undergo season-ending surgery for a neck injury suffered Sept. 20 against the New York Jets. Reed was hurt in the first quarter of the Packers’ 20-17 overtime win and will miss the rest of the season.
“Growing up a big Pack fan,” Zeitler said, returning to Wisconsin, “it’s pretty great. My family’s pretty excited. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
Zeitler, a Pro Bowl selection in 2023, has made 213 starts across six NFL teams, primarily at right guard. He played for Tennessee last season and had surgery for a leg injury afterward. He said he is learning Green Bay’s terminology, while drawing on experience in a range of offensive systems.
Green Bay has been working to address its line problems. The team signed guard Laken Tomlinson to its 53-player roster and added Mekhi Becton to the practice squad Monday. All three newcomers were first-round draft picks. Coach Matt LaFleur said veteran players could help settle a unit that includes young teammates.
The line’s struggles were evident in last Thursday’s 35-14 loss to Atlanta, when Green Bay failed to protect quarterback Jordan Love and managed 17 yards on nine rushing attempts. Rookie Jager Burton started at left guard in place of injured Aaron Banks, while right guard Jacob Monk had only one career start before this season. Banks and Monk did not practice Wednesday because of injuries.
The Packers, 1-2, hope to get their new guards on the field quickly, potentially for Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay. Love said Wednesday that pressure has affected his mechanics and that he needs to make decisions faster.
Reed’s absence leaves Green Bay without a key slot receiver. “He is one of one,” Love said. “He is a big-time player.” The Packers will need more production from Christian Watson, who has 17 catches for 284 yards and four touchdowns, and Matthew Golden, with 15 catches for 253 yards and one touchdown.
