Janesville schools join eight-team adapted sports league in southern Wisconsin
Janesville Parker and Janesville Craig have joined a regional high school league offering students with disabilities competition in soccer, floor hockey and wiffle ball. Organizers say interest from other districts could bring more schools into the program.
MIDDLETON, Wis. — Two Janesville high schools have joined a southern Wisconsin adapted sports league, bringing the program to eight schools and expanding opportunities for students with disabilities to compete for their schools.
Janesville Parker and Janesville Craig are the newest participants in the league, which offers soccer, floor hockey and wiffle ball across three sports seasons. Games are held indoors to make the competitions accessible to all student-athletes.
The program began several years ago with matchups between Sun Prairie East and Sun Prairie West. It now includes those schools, along with Middleton, DeForest, Verona/Mount Horeb, Waunakee and the two Janesville schools.
Kevin Bavery, co-coach and co-director of Middleton High School’s adapted sports program, said seeing Janesville added to the schedule was a sign the league is gaining traction. Coaches said other area districts have asked about joining future competitions.
The goal, said Middleton co-coach and co-director Jess McIntosh, is to build a larger adapted sports conference so students at more schools can take part.
For athletes, the weekly games aim to bring the energy and traditions of varsity competition, including music and team support. Middleton senior captain David Chang said teamwork and encouraging teammates are central to his role. Senior Ezra Burger put his own goal more simply: winning.
Bavery said the effect extends beyond the results, giving students a chance to be recognized by their peers in a new way within their school communities.
