Packers’ 31-7 win over Chicago clouded by possible Achilles injury to Javon Hargrave

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur said the team fears defensive tackle Javon Hargrave suffered an Achilles injury late in Sunday’s victory over the Bears. Hargrave’s possible loss would add to a lengthy run of serious injuries affecting Packers starters and contributors.

Packers’ 31-7 win over Chicago clouded by possible Achilles injury to Javon Hargrave
GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers beat the Chicago Bears 31-7 on Sunday, but the victory at Lambeau Field came with a serious injury concern: veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave was taken off the field on a cart late in the fourth quarter, and the team fears he injured his Achilles tendon. Coach Matt LaFleur said after the game that he had visited Hargrave in the training room and that the outlook “doesn’t look good.” The team had not confirmed a diagnosis or said whether Hargrave’s season was over. LaFleur called Hargrave both a key player and a valued teammate, saying the injury took some of the joy out of the win. He also noted that it happened at a point in the game when the outcome was no longer in doubt. The 33-year-old defensive lineman entered Sunday listed as questionable with a toe injury sustained late in the week. He had also missed Green Bay’s Week 2 game against the New York Jets while in concussion protocol and dealing with a knee injury. Hargrave finished Sunday with six tackles, two quarterback hits and a pass deflection, according to the team’s reported statistics. Green Bay signed Hargrave to strengthen its defensive front after his strong seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021 and 2022, when new Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon also coached him. Hargrave played 16 games for Minnesota last season before joining Green Bay. His injury could further strain a Packers roster that has lost numerous players to season-ending injuries over the past 16 games, including playoffs. Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper tore an Achilles tendon in Green Bay’s Oct. 4 win over Tampa Bay, a week before Hargrave’s injury. Other players sidelined during the stretch include tight end Tucker Kraft, defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, edge rusher Micah Parsons and wide receiver Jayden Reed. Offensive lineman Zach Bako-Bewele suffered separate season-ending injuries during the period. Asked how Green Bay would respond to the losses, LaFleur said the team would rely on its depth. “It’s the next man up,” he said, adding that players entering the lineup are expected to perform at a high level and that responsibility rests with all 11 players on the field.
