Evan Williams’ all-around impact gives Packers a boost before Bears matchup
The third-year safety made an interception, sack and late-game pressure in Green Bay’s win over Tampa Bay. He also leads the Packers in tackles and pass breakups heading into Sunday’s game against Chicago.
GREEN BAY — Evan Williams’ interception in the Green Bay Packers’ Oct. 4 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers nearly slipped away before officials reversed the initial incomplete-pass ruling. The third-year safety went on to finish the game with a sack and a late quarterback pressure, reinforcing his growing role as a versatile playmaker in Green Bay’s defense.
Williams said he initially thought he had not made the catch and handed the ball to a sideline equipment staffer after the play was ruled incomplete. An NFL replay-assist review determined his knee touched down in bounds before he slid toward the Buccaneers’ sideline, and the ruling was changed to an interception.
The Packers celebrated the turnover with a coordinated routine inspired by a viral kayaking video. Williams described the moment as “aura farming,” a phrase he said refers to trying to look cool and build social standing.
His impact extended well beyond the interception. Williams played all 63 defensive snaps against Tampa Bay, then recorded a sack on the Buccaneers’ final possession and pressured the quarterback on the last play. Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon said he blitzed Williams on three straight snaps to close out the game.
Through four games, Williams leads Green Bay with 32 tackles, including 20 solo stops, and four pass breakups. He also has two tackles for loss, three quarterback hits and one interception. One of his pass breakups came on a deep throw during the Packers’ Week 2 win over the New York Jets.
“He’s a really good player,” Gannon said, citing Williams’ contributions against the run and pass, in coverage and as a blitzer. Coach Matt LaFleur pointed to the safety’s versatility and football intelligence as reasons the team can use him in different roles.
That flexibility could matter more after linebacker Edgerrin Cooper ruptured his Achilles’ tendon against Tampa Bay, an injury that will end his season. Isaiah McDuffie is set to replace Cooper in the starting lineup.
Williams and the Packers, who are 2-2, are scheduled to host the 3-1 Chicago Bears at Lambeau Field on Sunday. Williams’ interception ball, recovered by Packers equipment director Chris Kuehn after the game, is now in his locker at the stadium.
Safety Xavier McKinney said he has watched Williams mature since joining the team and expects him to keep developing. Williams will have another chance to build on his start as Green Bay enters a divisional matchup with a key defensive contributor sidelined.
