Mitchell’s catch seals Brewers’ NLDS win and sets up Dodgers showdown
Milwaukee beat San Diego 3-1 to clinch its National League Division Series and reach the NLCS for the fourth time. The Brewers will open against the Dodgers Sunday in Milwaukee.
The Milwaukee Brewers are headed to the National League Championship Series after a 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres in San Diego on Wednesday, clinching their NLDS and advancing to the league’s final four for the fourth time.
Milwaukee took the lead in the third inning when Garrett Mitchell drove in Sal Frelick. Fernando Tatis Jr. answered with a home run to left-center in the bottom half, tying the game at 1-1.
Jackson Chourio put the Brewers ahead in the fifth with a run-scoring hit. Frelick added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth, making it 3-1.
The Padres threatened in the eighth. With a runner aboard, Manny Machado hit a deep drive to center field, but Mitchell caught it at the wall to preserve Milwaukee’s lead and prevent a potential tying homer. Trevor Megill then retired San Diego in order in the ninth to secure the win.
The Brewers will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. Los Angeles advanced from its division series against Atlanta on Wednesday, and Game 1 is scheduled for Sunday in Milwaukee.
