Waunakee, Beaver Dam take control of conference races in Week 8 football
Waunakee edged Monona Grove 7-3, while Beaver Dam beat Edgewood 50-30 in matchups of the final undefeated teams in their conferences. Lake Mills clinched the Capitol Conference title as Tyler Wollin set a state career touchdown-pass record.
Southern Wisconsin high school football teams settled conference races, protected undefeated records and made late pushes for wins Friday in Week 8 of the WIAA season.
Waunakee beat Monona Grove 7-3 in a defensive showdown between the last two undefeated teams in the Badger Large Conference. The victory put Waunakee in control of the conference title race. Monona Grove entered the game ranked No. 3 in Division 2, while Waunakee was No. 6 in Division 1.
Beaver Dam also won a matchup between its conference’s remaining undefeated teams, defeating Edgewood 50-30 to take sole possession of first place in the Badger Small Conference. Beaver Dam, ranked No. 10 in Division 2, joined the conference this year. Edgewood was ranked No. 8 in Division 4.
In the Big 8 Conference, Verona held off Madison Memorial 20-14 to remain undefeated in conference play. Verona led 14-6 before Memorial’s Sam Apricio scored on a run and added a two-point conversion to tie the game. Brady Bowdish’s touchdown run put Verona back in front, and the Wildcats’ defense stopped Memorial’s final drive.
Lake Mills beat Big Foot 40-14 on homecoming night, clinching the Capitol Conference title. Tyler Wollin set a record for the most career touchdown passes by a Wisconsin high school player.
Other results included Columbus’ 19-12 comeback win over Edgerton on senior night. Calvin Hajewski’s touchdown run completed a 12-point rally for the Cardinals. Portage edged Lakeside Lutheran 29-28, while Middleton defeated Madison West 49-14 and Sun Prairie East beat Oregon 35-19.
Belleville beat Marshall 35-7, and Platteville stayed undefeated in the SWC with a 43-42 win over Prairie du Chien. Ithaca/Weston, ranked No. 2 in Division 7, improved to 8-0 and clinched a share of the Scenic Bluffs Conference title with a 42-28 victory over Royall. No. 1 Darlington in Division 5 defeated Cuba City 41-7.
Three teams share the Six Rivers Conference lead with one regular-season game remaining: Iowa-Grant, Potosi/Cassville and River Ridge. Potosi/Cassville beat Black Hawk/Warren 27-22, while River Ridge and Iowa-Grant also won.
Mauston defeated Wisconsin Dells 34-28 in the 81st meeting between the rivals. Wisconsin Dells leads the series 47-34. In eight-player football, undefeated Abundant Life/St. Ambrose, ranked No. 6, beat No. 7 Palmyra-Eagle 28-23 to move to 8-0.
